Are you licensed and fully insured?
Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' coverage. This protects you if something goes wrong.
Are you local, and how long have you worked in this area?
Local contractors are accountable and understand prairie weather. Be cautious of out-of-town storm chasers.
Will I get a detailed written quote?
A proper quote breaks down materials, labour, tear-off, disposal, and timeline — not just one lump sum.
What warranty do you offer?
You want both the manufacturer's material warranty and a workmanship guarantee, in writing.
Who actually does the work?
Ask whether it's their own crew or subcontractors, and who supervises the job.
Will you handle the tear-off and cleanup?
Confirm old materials are removed and the site is cleaned, including a magnet sweep for nails.
Can you help with my insurance claim?
For storm damage, a contractor experienced with claims can document everything properly.
What's your payment schedule?
Reasonable deposits are normal. Be wary of anyone demanding full payment up front.
Can you provide local references?
Recent local references — ideally ones you can drive past — tell you more than online reviews alone.
What happens if you find more damage once you start?
A good roofer explains how change orders work before the work begins, so there are no surprises.
Red Flags to Walk Away From
Door-knocking right after a storm with high-pressure tactics and "today only" pricing.
No physical local address or only a cell number and a magnetic truck sign.
Demands large cash payment up front before any work or materials.
Won't put the quote or warranty in writing, or is vague about what's included.
Quote is dramatically cheaper than everyone else — usually a sign corners will be cut.
Can't or won't provide proof of insurance and local references.
